2009 Monterey Weekend

Submitted by Richard Collins

I recently returned to Bowling Green from nearly 7 years in the San Francisco bay area and a membership in the Diablo Region of PCA. Every year we made a point to do the Monterey Historic Races and the Pebble Beach Concours. The week before was also actually a great time at the “Pre-historics” which features all cars both invited or not to the “Big Show”. This year was a somewhat special Anniversary year as it featured Porsches on the track (140 of them invited to run) from pre war to 1980, although exhibition runs allowed newer cars as the GT3RS to drive as well.  There were 4 of the 917k and 22 or more of the 956 and 962 cars known around the world for their prowess on the track. They were driven by the usual suspects of Derek Bell, Vic Elford, Brian Redman, etc. In the paddock were all other aircooled 935’s 934’s, RSR’s, lightweights, 904’s, 908’s and non Porsche as well.  Healeys, Vettes, Lotus, Old indy cars, several valuable Ferrari and Bugattis were there mingling with the Porsches.

The parking area had 4 areas for all the Porsche spectators which numbered in the thousands, most of whom had their cars. It was quite a show.  Everything from new GT2’s to a RastaRacing 914 to clones of all the famous Porsche models were parked for viewing.  Stories abounded.

Pictures replace a thousand words so here are a few examples of what we saw during our 2 of the 3 days at the track.
