Ken's Ramblings

Ken's Ramblings - October 2009

First, I want to comment on the 356 Registry East Coast Holiday at West Baden, IN. If you have never seen this place, you are missing one of the most amazing resort hotels ever. It was originally built in 1902 and finished in less than a year. It had the largest free standing dome in the world until the Houston Astrodome was built. The Atrium is 200 feet across and 6 stories high. An amazing engineering feat for 1902! (And we can't get a simple east end bridge across the Ohio river.)

It was redecorated in 1917 and was a high-end hotel until the stock market crash in 1929. Later it was sold to the Jesuits and used by them as a monastery for 30 years. Then it sold to the Northwood Institute as a culinary school. After the school closed, it sat empty and abandoned for 20 years and was literally falling down. It was recognized as a valuable landmark and saved and returned to its 1917 style decor at a cost of many, many millions. All the furnishings were locally made in the 1917 style. The renovation is first class.

Ken's Ramblings - September 2009

The 356 Registry East Coast Holiday is coming to West Baden Indiana on 10-13 September. The 356 Registry Holidays are our annual gathering of the faithful for a few days of fellowship with other 356 owners and to share ideas and show off our cars. It's like a 356 family reunion and I have attended these since 1984 and actually hosted (with plenty of help) the Registry Holiday here in Louisville back in 1986. The West Baden Hotel is an ideal site for this event and we have basically taken it over for the weekend. John and Shelly Howe, Mike Long, Andy Daugherty (concour chair) and I are working hard to make this a memorable weekend for 356 owners. The concour will be on the grounds at West Baden on Saturday. If any KyPCA member would like to see the concour on Saturday you are welcome.

Ken's Ramblings - August 2009

We just acquired three 356's parts cars recently - two 1963 Coupes and a 1960 Coupe.
Only one (a 1960 T5B coupe) is a candidate for restoration. The other two are stripped shells
and are only good for parts. As they say, 'ya gotta kiss a lot of frogs to find a princess'. We
have gutted the two bad shells and sent one to Shelbyville, Indiana, to save another Porsche.
The third one was truly beyond help so it was stripped of anything that could possible by used
and is on the trailer to be recycled into something else. You know it was rough if we give up on
it!

Ken's Ramblings - July 2009

Every so often things happen that make your day. I had to go to the main post office to mail a carton. The line was fairly long. One clerk was helping a couple with their passport. It is a time consuming process and really slows the lines down. Fortunately the other two clerks were taking care of customers in a fast manner. Then the second clerk became involved with a customer with a problem and that left one clerk 'to take care of business'. I noticed the young couple in front of me had passport documents in their hand and I assumed that they would now tie up the third and last clerk and I would be there forever. I asked the young 'lady' (and her boyfriend) if they were applying for a passport and she said yes. I asked if I could go ahead of her as I only had a package to drop off and she replied NO (in a nasty tone, I thought). Well crap!

Ken's Ramblings - June 2009

Last weekend (16 May) several brave souls made the trip to Brush Creek Farm for the annual Tennessee Tubs BBQ. I say 'brave' because the weather was threatening rain and some 'wusses' didn't want to get wet. Anyway we made it down in spitting rain and when we arrived it was clear and very nice. Several 356's and many other Porsches were in attendance.
