Ken's Ramblings
Ken's Ramblings - April 2009
I got a phone call this afternoon telling me that the Neil Huffman's 19 car 356 collection has
been sold to some folks from North Carolina. Sad to see the collection leaving Louisville....
Neil really enjoyed his cars and he enjoyed showing his collection to visitors. Neil Huffman was a
good man.
The KYANA swap meet is just around the corner. It is the largest indoor auto related swap
meet in the country. This year it will be in the East Wing of the Kentucky Fairgrounds. Occasionally I
can find something Porsche but we usually just find tools and expendables. The dates are April 3-4-
5. Friday is move-in day. It is open to the public Saturday 8 - 6 and Sunday 8 - 4. Admission is $10.
A great way to spend a day browsing thru 'stuff'.
Our part of the work on the 1953 is finished and the car is on its way back to Ohio. Next we
will do some more work on the old garage and get ready for the 1958 356 cabriolet project. We just
acquired a couple of new Lincoln welders. One is a state of the art tig welder. Now to learn how to
use it efficiently……
I get a lot of junk mail. Last fall I just kept it in a pile and recently sorted and counted them. In
just a short time I received 18 from the RNC, 11 from GOA, 25 from NRA, 10 from the NRSC and 35
miscellaneous 'political' fund raising organizations. I think that if you donate to one you will get on a
'list' that is shared. While I support most of those folks, I limit donations.
Another thing I've noticed is that I get subscription renewal letters at least 6 months in advance
of the expiration. My subscription to Playboy expires this fall and I am already getting letters
reminding me to re-subscribe. I just open them and note the offer and date the envelope. When it is
about to expire I will get phone calls. Then it is time to negotiate a rate. Another 'trick' to get a good
rate is to give yourself a gift subscription. Use your middle name for the gift to you. (By the way, I
only take Playboy for the articles.)
Here's another fund raising gimmick. My phone number in the phone book lists an old computer
line as the first listing. When that number rings it is a good bet that it is a fundraiser going thru
the phone book. It is another tip-off if they mispronounce my last name. I have two choices: one is to
tell them they have reached a private number at a 'Gov’t. agency' and to delete the number from
their list; second, if I have time, is to feign interest and ask them to hold while I answer the door.
Then I lay the phone down for a while and pick it up occasionally telling them to be patient and I will
be with them very shortly. My record for wasting their time was 6 minutes. I realize that they are
only doing a tough job and the best thing would be to tell them I am not interested and just hang up,
but...
I was watching Neil Cavuto recently and he had a Congresswoman from Florida on as a
guest to discuss the various earmarks that are included in the recent 'stimulus' bill. She sponsored
an earmark to pay for 'solar powered streetlights'. Say what ????
I was warned that if I voted for John McCain that there would be a drop in consumer confidence,
more troops would be deployed, the economy would get worse, the deficit would increase,
more crooks in high places in the Government. I voted for John McCain and they were right.
I sure hope Obama's basketball 'bracket' picks are better than his cabinet picks!
