Ken's Ramblings - August 2009

We just acquired three 356's parts cars recently - two 1963 Coupes and a 1960 Coupe.
Only one (a 1960 T5B coupe) is a candidate for restoration. The other two are stripped shells
and are only good for parts. As they say, 'ya gotta kiss a lot of frogs to find a princess'. We
have gutted the two bad shells and sent one to Shelbyville, Indiana, to save another Porsche.
The third one was truly beyond help so it was stripped of anything that could possible by used
and is on the trailer to be recycled into something else. You know it was rough if we give up on
it!

I am still putting parts together for the 1951 356 motor. Parts are difficult to find and
when found are 'pricey'. The challenge is finding the parts or fabricating those that are not
available. Plans are to have it finished this year. Another long term project is the engine for
Jim Perrin's Denzel. It is very similar to a 356 engine. Not many were ever built so parts for it
are even rarer. I have been working on it since 2002. Every so often another part is found and
put with the collection. The long block is finished and now we are gathering the engine sheet
metal and carb linkage.

I am always on the 'hunt' for 356 parts, especially early motor parts. All leads appreciated.

I see that Darrell 'Shifty' Powers died of cancer on 17 June. There were no parades,
no event at the Staples Center, no 24-7 TV coverage, no weeping fans on TV or congressional
moment of silence. Darrell 'Shifty' Powers served in WWII with Easy Company of the 506th
Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne. The TV miniseries Band of Brothers told
the story of Easy Company.

Ever hear of a post turtle? When you are driving down a country road and you come
across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. You know it didn't get
there by itself, it doesn't belong there, it doesn't know what to do while up there, and you just
want to help the dumb thing get down. Kind of reminds me of the current congress…….

And the quote for the month: My all time favorite was by Mr. Scott of Star Trek, "
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me"(Fridays Child, 1 December 1967). I
have edited that to "fool me once in 2008, shame on you, fool me again in 2010, shame on me".
