Ken's Ramblings
Ken's Ramblings - January 2011
On 7 December (anniversary of Pearl Harbor) I was 'chatting' with a friend and he mentioned that he has been to the Arizona memorial and also to Nagasaki to see that memorial. He described the areas as 'moving' as well as spooky.
Here in Louisville, we have Waverly Hills as a designated 'spooky' place. I have often thought it would be fun to tour the place but access is limited and I would want to do it on Halloween to get the full effect :-)
The spookiest place I have been is Andersonville Ga., the site of a Confederate Prison camp in the Civil War. It was a dull dreary day with a light drizzle of rain and a bit of a chill in the air. I took the self guided tour with the recorded explanation of what I was seeing. I had read McKinley Cantors book, 'Andersonville' and his words came to life as I toured the area. I could almost feel the misery of the prisoners as I saw the actual place where they suffered and died. Nor sure about ghosts but I seemed to feel a 'presence'.
As we watch TV we see many ads for various medications. The spooky part of the ads is the disclaimers listing the side effects. I would rather have the medical problem than to take the risk of the side effects. On the same subject how about these slogans. For Breast Cancer awareness...'big or small, save them all' or for Avodart 'get a start with Avodart'.
Andy and Darren are making serious progress on the '59 cabriolet body shell. The floors are now in place as is the engine bay. The car had been hit in the rear and damaged the inner panels and the engine bay was distorted. They split the subframe at the rear and pushed it back in place and replaced the bad metal. The headlight buckets will be replaced as well as the fender area around the buckets. The door bottoms are also on the replace list. The hood has a kink when it was closed improperly, That will be fun to fix. If his schedule holds it should go to Paul Daugherty's body shop by years end. Then we start cleaning up the parts, ordering the interior and top material, sending the instruments out to be restored and ordering a new wiring harness as well as fresh chrome work.
I know things are going to H. I have been ordering the G. Gordon Liddys 'Stacked and Packed' calendar for the garage for many years. It features good looking women with firearms. Yesterday I called to order the 2011 version and was advised that they wont have one for 2011. Bummer
Next I was going thru the bolt and nut inventory and needed to order some fresh stock. I called my usual supplier and the phone is disconnected. I must assume they are out of business... A pity, they have been a reliable source for the odd metric hardware I need and use.
Recently I was approached by a fellow and he asked me the quickest way to get to St Matthews. I asked him if he was walking or driving and he said driving and I told him that was the quickest way :-)
I still believe that for a person to receive 'public assistance' they should pass a drug test. If passing a drug test is required for employment, then a drug test should be required to receive a govt check.
While on my soapbox, I see where the city of Berkley Ca has voted to honor PFC 'leaky' as a hero. Also Berkley has disallowed military recruiters. I suggest that the next time 'Berzerkley' has a civic emergency and the National Guard is needed, the NG should tell them sorry, we are busy..
I note some folks in Washington are whining about 'Compromise'. As I recall for the past two years the 'out of office' party was locked out of any discussions about the health care bill and the stimulus. I remember Princess Nancy telling us to pass the bill so we could see what's in it. I also understand that Princess Nancy will not have access to the luxury airplane to fly around in after she loses the Speakers job in January. Word is that she will be using Southwest Airlines, 'bags fly free'.
I want to wish all a Merry Christmas. I see many retail stores will not use Christmas in their decorations and advertisements. When I shop I always wish the checkout clerk a Merry Christmas and note the uncomfortable look on their face, because they are afraid to return the greeting because it violates a 'corporate policy'.
